Transforming lives, Restoring Hope: Medical Camp in Laikipia

In May, 2025, Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) through the support of AfCiC Italia conducted a mobile medical camp in DolDol in Laikipia North Kenya. This medical camp in partnership with One More Day for Children Foundation (OMDC) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) through Laikipia county government, was aimed at providing medical care to vulnerable children and community members who occasionally face difficulties to access quality healthcare.

Healthcare Challenges in Laikipia

Laikipia North is among the semi-arid regions in Kenya and majority of its inhabitants are mainly pastoralists. Most of the community around here face difficulties whenever they fall ill due to poverty and the long distance between their homes and the hospitals. Loise Lentiku, a community member from DolDol, explains some of the challenges they face while seeking medical care. “The biggest challenge here is poverty. Some people fall sick but because they lack the finances required or someone to support them, they miss out on medical care. This exacerbates the conditions of those who fall sick”, she solemnly spoke.

According to Loise and other fellow community members, most of the time, they prefer to use the traditional herbs which rarely offer long term cure. The herbs are only effective for short term pain relief. Lack of qualified or few traditional doctors to offer these kind of treatment has made the situation worse.

Chiara Puccetti, a medical graduate from AfCiC Italia, noted that the most common observable diseases among the community are headaches, stomach aches, flu and back pains. These illness were as a result of proper nutrition among children and excessive work on those suffering from back pains. “During the medical camp, most of the people complained of headaches and stomach aches. Others had injuries on their bodies”, she noted.

 Our Impact

This medical camp successfully reached more than 200 children including school-going and more than 50 community members including men and women. Those diagnosed were offered medication while those in critical conditions were facilitated for referrals. Kennedy Njoroge, AfCiC Kenya’s project officer based in Laikipia commended on the support and the partnership throughout this medical camp.

“It is always amazing to see community members and children who cannot access medical care attended to. This medical camp has been a life changing moment for the community here. I wish to thank all those involved in ensuring the success of this medical camp. Many thanks to AfCiC Kenya, AfCiC Italia, One More day for Children Foundation and the Ministry of Health through Laikipia County Government”, he noted.
